GEORGE NEWS - The captivating Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers will be performing at the Oakhurst Insurance Arts Theatre on Saturday 28 October at 19:30.

The talented a cappella group founded in 2004 have performed for the George Music Society before and captivated the audiences with their beautiful harmonies.

Their repertoire covers a variety of music styles including popular music by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Queen, Mendelsohn and many more. Their main focus however is vocal Renaissance music, especially madrigals.

Madrigal is a form of vocal chamber music that originated in Northern Italy during the 14th century. After declining and all but disappearing in the 15th century, it flourished again and ultimately achieved international status in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

The origin of the term ''madrigal' is uncertain, but it probably derives from the Latin word "matricale", meaning "in the mother tongue" - which in this case means Italian, not Latin.

Although madrigals became popular outside Italy, the only other country to develop a strong native tradition was England.
