Local rapper Churx Nkosana and DJ Luvo have initiated a campaign through which they want to reach out to young people in schools, hospitals and prison through live performances.
"Our city is being plagued by increasing crime, large numbers of people with HIV/Aids as well as child abuse. We feel we cannot just sit and watch our city being destroyed," says Nkosana. "As artists we have decided to come together and with drama, dance, singing and poetry to do our bit to lift up the spirit of the youth. We want to tell them that even if they are in jail or HIV positive, they can still make it in life. They have a second chance. There is hope," he explains.
They have already garnered support for the campaign from a number of artists, including Jonty, Danni-D, Lady B, Lady K, Ntethoyabantu, Mind Map, DJ E-Vee, Makoya Mrapa, DJ Sandy and Uprising Band.
They appeared at Outenikwa House of Safety recently, and at the weekend they were on stage at the Pacaltsdorp 200 year festival celebrations which centred around the youth to coincide with National Youth Day, completely carrying away their young audiences.
Next on their agenda is the youth at the hospital and as from next term, they want to kick off their school visits with an appearance at York High.
Platform for local artists
Through their collaboration, the group also wants to create a platform where local artists can enjoy more exposure and be promoted in their hometown. Nkosana invites all local music artists who would be interested in such a campaign to join in. "No matter what genre of music you make, you are welcome to join our efforts," he says.
