GEORGE NEWS - The Worldwide Knit in Public Day event held at the Outeniqua Lifestyle Centre in George on Saturday 13 June drew strong community support as local knitters and crocheters gathered in aid of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative.
The event, organised by the George Knitwits, celebrated friendship, creativity and kindness - values that lie at the heart of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement.
The participants spent the day knitting, crocheting and connecting while contributing towards the group's goal of completing 67 blankets before 18 July.
The organiser, Lee Potgieter, expressed her gratitude for the generous donations received during the event. The contributions of wool will help the group reach its blanket-making target, while a donation of jerseys for toddlers will benefit young children in need.
Among the highlights of the day was a visit from three sisters, the Kuscuses. After seeing the George Knitwits' advertisement for Worldwide Knit in Public Day, they decided to attend the event, donate some handcrafted items and meet the local group. Their contributions included knitted and crocheted blanket squares, baby booties, beanies, ear warmers and wool for future projects. The donated squares will be incorporated into colourful blankets created by members of the group.

The George Knitwits regularly produce blankets, scarves and beanies for charitable distribution and welcome donations of wool and knitted or crocheted squares. The members work together to transform these contributions into items for people in need.

The George Knitwits form part of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement, a non-profit organisation dedicated to spreading warmth through handmade creations. In addition to support from community members, many retailers and community partners, like The Sandwich Shop, continue to open their doors to welcome knitters, crocheters and supporters of all skill levels.
