RUGBY NEWS - In another sterling performance the South Western Districts (SWD) defeated the Free State with a 35 - 34 victory on day one at the annual FNB u18 Craven Week in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
Free State, always a favourite, was shocked by three tries in five minutes by Tyrese Plaatjies, Jade Peterson and Kai Pratt which took the wind out of their sails.
Some controversy surrounded the Plaatjies try as it seemed as if he had stepped on the touchline in the in-goal area but referee Charlwyn Darries awarded the try.
But the star for SWD was its big inside centre, Christian Vorster, who was devastating on the attack and defence.
Vorster has earned admirers across the country with his physical presence on the field and has all the tools to go far in the game if he chooses to pursue rugby professionally.
He is one of seven players from Oakdale who has made the SWD Craven team.
In the victory the other outstanding players for SWD were Dian Augustyn (lock), Reinhardt Viljoen (fullback), Jacobus de Villiers (eightman) and Keenan Myners (hooker).
