FOOTBALL NEWS - The Plettenberg Bay outfit Oriented Birds kept their title hopes alive when they defeated last season's regional champions, Simunye FC, with a score of 2-1 on Saturday 4 February.
The Safa Eden Regional Men's League game was played at the Kwanokuthula Stadium in Plettenberg Bay. Khanyisani "Mashesha" Radebe and Lehloholono "Miller" Mkhondo scored for the home team and Vuyiswa Dyonas for the Lawaaikamp soldiers.
So far, Oriented Birds has played fourteen league games with eleven victories and three draws, scored 37 goals and are at the top of the log with 36 points. Simunye is fighting to get into the top five.
The first half saw some skilful playing with the Lawaaikamp soldiers putting in extra effort in the last few minutes, but there was no score on the board at half time. The Birds increased pressure on their opponents in the second half with impressive combination passes from the centre of the field.
They were awarded a penalty after one of these attacks and Radebe succeeded with his spot kick to make it 1-0. The Birds' second goal came after a clever pass from Radebe to Lehloholono "Miller" Mkhondo, who made sure to increase their score to 2-0.
Simunye received a free kick just outside the box and Vuyisa Dyonas outsmarted the goalkeeper with a powerful shot changing the score to 2-1.
The home team's victory ensured that they collected maximum points at home.
