FOOTBALL NEWS - Black Cats were crowned as the new champions of the George Local Football Association (Geolfa) Covid-19 tournament after sinking Young Blues 2-1 in the finals last weekend.
Siphamandla Hlangabeza and Tsepo Mbenyana scored for Black Cats while Mthembu Mandla netted an own goal for Young Blues.
The Lawaaikamp Stadium was overflowing last weekend as the two Lawaaikamp rivals battled it out. The excitement and energy were felt to the far corners of the field with the supporters of both teams rooting for their clubs.
Young Blues defeated Eastern City 3-0 in the first semi-final after which Black Cats walloped Young Pirates 4-0 in the second semi-final.
The Lawaaikamp derby final started very well with both sides hunting for the first goal. Young Blues received the first corner kick of the game but they failed to break the net.
Both teams were playing enterprising football with Black Cats relying heavily on the speed of Shane-Lee Windvogel up front.
Mivuyo "Sheshido" Ngubo delivered a powerful free kick from the left side of the field, but his teammates missed the target. Young Blues goalkeeper, Bathande Jacobs, was nearly punished after he made a careless mistake inside the box, but the shot by Luyanda "Fire" Laho of Black Cats hit the cross-bar.
Young Blues received a set piece just outside the box but Black Cats goalkeeper, Siphosethu "Senzo" Nyunya, made a brilliant save, denying Young Blues their first goal. Luyanda "Fire" Laho missed another chance from the left side of the field with his shot hitting the side net.
A clever pass by Luyanda Laho of Black Cats also failed when Siphamandla Hlangabeza's subsequent shot went over the cross-bar.
The second half started fast with both teams chasing the ball for their first goal. Young Blues right winger, Ayabulela Jantjies, launched an attack on the right side of the field but his strike went wide.
Young Blues scored the first goal of the game, after which Hlangabeza surprised everyone when he scored the equaliser for Black Cats. Black Cats then received a penalty after Hlangabeza was fouled inside the box and Tsepo Mbenyana sealed the victory 2-1 in this nail-bitting Lawaaikamp derby final.
