SOCCER NEWS - Great excitement thrived last week when Asanda Mlunguza returned from her soccer match duties at the U15 National Schools Sports Tournament in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, during the school holidays.
The 29-year-old, who had been identified to represent Safa Eden at this national event, was nominated the best assistant referee at the championship.
Mlunguza told George Herald winning an award means a lot to her, and that she believes this is the beginning of many good things to come. Her dream is to officiate big games that are broadcast on TV one day.
She started her journey as referee in the 2017/18 season under the George Local Football Association, where the male officials were very supportive of her football dream.
She had officiated at various tournaments in the Western Cape, but this is the biggest tournament under her belt.
Referring to the earlier disadvantages women in sport had to endure, Mlunguza said she would like to help other young hopeful females advance in their careers.
She said she was willing to walk the extra mile with them to support them. One of her big wishes is that the Western Cape would help promote women in their sport careers.
She said with workshops and training, it would be easier for them to reach higher levels.
