CRICKET NEWS - Jozi Stars’ Rassie van der Dussen and Dan Christian's 47-ball partnership of 118 was the bedrock that set up the home side for a comparatively easy 101-run victory over the Tshwane Spartans in their Mzansi Super League match, which was played at the Bidvest Wanderers, on Tuesday night.
Nono Pongolo then rounded off the victory with an astounding six for 20, the second-best bowling figures by a South African in T20 cricket.
Thanks to their endeavours, the Stars finish second to the Cape Town Blitz and will have a home town playoff match on Friday against a team still to be decided on Wednesday.
The chase was never going to be easy.
The Spartans were set 240 to win after their hosts recorded 239 for three, thanks to a fluent unbeaten 44-ball 96 from Van der Dussen and a manic 52 off 19 deliveries from Christian who launched six maximums into the stands.
The Pretoria-based side were behind the eight ball from the start. Andrea Agathangelou (10) fell in the third over, Dean Elgar (7) in the fourth and AB de Villiers (0) in the fifth - three wickets down with only 25 runs on the board.
Fast bowlers Beuran Hendricks, Duanne Olivier and Kagiso Rabada put the cat among the pigeons.
