GEORGE NEWS - The start of the winter school holidays was anything but quiet for the Inkcubeko Youth Science Centre in Thembalethu, where young minds were inspired by a Youth Month celebration filled with educational activities.
The event on Saturday morning, 27 June, catered for participants aged seven to 25.
A Youth Day colour run was one of the highlights. Throughout the day, the learners were also entertained by the Tabatha Primary School choir, led by Nontsikelelo Morgan.
Sibongile Sambokwe, a facilitator at Inkcubeko and the event's organiser, said the aim was to celebrate Youth Month while promoting healthy lifestyles, community participation and youth development. She added that the event included the colour run, a fun walk, some entertainment, educational programmes and prize giveaways.
Sambokwe said the goal was to bring young people together in a safe and enjoy-able environment during the school holidays while encouraging positive community involvement.
Xoliswa Mgushelo, a senior employee of Inkcubeko, shared some insight into Youth Month in line with the legacy of the 1976 Youth. She said the intention was to give young people a platform to express themselves in the pursuit of quality education.
She reflected on the challenges of 1976, noting that access to education had not been easy and came with significant barriers.
She encouraged young people to stay in school, emphasising the importance of education and mutual support among learners.
She added that completing Grade 12 should not be seen as the end of the journey, and encouraged the learners to pursue further studies at universities or colleges.
During the second part of the programme, the learners had the opportunity to engage with social workers and health professionals on issues affecting young people, including mental health.
Buhlebendalo Jonhope, Akahlulwa Gantsho and Aviwe Gcuku were the winners in the Youth Day colour run.
