Zuma defeated Mbeki 10 years ago, paving the way for his ascension to power.
In the period leading up to the Polokwane conference, Mbeki was accused of abusing state resources to target political opponents, including Zuma and for centralising power in government.
Speaking to Power FM on Thursday night, Mbeki said that even Julius Malema, who was a fierce campaigner for Zuma, was lied to.
“Lies were told to Juju by people who he had no reason to disbelieve.”
The former president says that lies were peddled during that period in the ANC to achieve certain objectives.
