GEORGE NEWS - Word got around that Clr Browen Johnson is the DA's choice for the next deputy mayor in George Council.
This was confirmed by the party's constituency head, Venolea Fortuin, who said the DA will put Johnson forward as their nomination for deputy mayor with pride, and have no doubt that he will serve George with excellence.
The election will be held tomorrow, Friday 7 February, during a special council meeting.
During this process, political parties nominate candidates, after which Council conducts an election, overseen by speaker Sean Snyman. The candidate with the majority vote is elected.
Once confirmed, the appointment is officially announced.
Former DA Clr Dawid Willemse congratulated Johnson on his 'appointment' in a Facebook post earlier this week, tagging Mayor Jaqulique von Brandis. Although a bit premature, Willemse's prediction is not off the mark. George is ruled by a majority DA Council.
Fortuin said the call for nominations went out in December. "All applicants went through a screening process and interviews were conducted on 24 January.
After the interviews, the applicants received the outcome, and a window period was open for any appeals. The successful candidate was informed thereafter."
