GEORGE NEWS - Raybin Figland has resigned as deputy mayor of George effective 31 January 2025, but remains a DA proportional councillor.
This was announced by Speaker Sean Snyman during a ordinary council meeting earlier today, Thursday 5 December.
The sudden resignation comes after the Good party submitted a motion of no confidence in Figland to Snyman’s office.
Although the DA and George Council claim they’ve tied all the loose ends in Figland’s alleged sexting matter with a 19-year-old matriculant, Good was not letting Figland off the hook that easy. Councillor Darryl Coeries from the Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners (PBI) seconded the motion.
Figland handed in his resignation shortly before the councillors were to vote about his removal so the motion of no confidence never served.
Figland’s suspension from party activities was lifted by the DA on Monday 11 November after he was suspended from all DA party activities in March this year.
During this time the DA and George Council conducted separate investigations into Figland’s alleged sexting with a matric learner in 2021.
The DA's national spokesperson, Willie Aucamp, said seeing that the young woman involved was over the age of 18, criminal liability was ruled out.
Aucamp said the (disciplinary) panel couldn't convict Figland in the matter as the key witness (the woman in question) refused to testify.
