NATIONAL NEWS - The importance of having strong political parties has been emphasised at the 7th Annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture.
Globally recognised conflict management expert, Vasu Gounden, was the main speaker at the lecture in Cape Town on Monday night.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu attended the event with his younger sister Gloria Radebe.
Under the theme “South Africa: Civil War or Civil Peace", Gounden reminded South Africans of the state the country could have found itself in, if political tensions during apartheid were not resolved.
He warns, however, that weak political parties can pose a threat to the strength of democracy today.
“We need leaders who are visionaries and have long-term plans, with the ability to bring a sense of urgency and discipline throughout our society.”
