Rietvlei manager Adelene Marais said the body of the 40-year-old rhino, Ma Koei, was found on Friday morning.
She said Ma Koei could have been killed between Wednesday and Thursday.
“It looks as if the poachers were targeting two rhinos, a female and a male,” said Marais.
“The male was shot once but managed to get away. Luckily, he was not seriously injured.”
Marais said Ma Koei’s horn was safely removed last year so she could not be dehorned by poachers.
She said the rangers did everything to save and protect the rhinos.
“The rangers do night patrol; they give their time and lives for these rhinos.”
“It is such a shame rhino poaching is far too common in the country and our animals are under constant attack”
Marais said the Stock Theft unit was investigating.
