Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - According to the Mossel Bay Lifeguarding report, 2 744 bluebottle and jellyfish sting cases were reported on Mossel Bay beaches from 1 December to 5 January.
Mossel Bay Municipality had originally noted in a statement on its Facebook page that it was only jellyfish stings. Mossel Bay Advertiser reported on this.
The municipality has since added that the 2 744 figure included bluebottle stings.
The municipality sent the following to the Advertiser:
"The Facebook post aims to offer residents remedies in case of being stung by marine creatures with stinging cells. The Lifesavers' Report provides statistics on stings and recommends community education on, among others, jellyfish."
The municipality said that in response to questions raised via social media comments and the media, assistant conservation officer at Mossel Bay Municipality, Rudi Minnie, has confirmed that bluebottles are more commonly the culprits than jellyfish.
