Based on the range-topping SR5 double cab 4x4, known as the Raider locally, the TRD, much like the Wildtrak and FX4, mainly gains a series of cosmetic enhancements, namely a TRD front bumper, red TRD front skidplate, black grille with red TRD lettering, black plastic wheel arch extensions, black six-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, rollbar, black body mouldings, TRD mudflaps, towing kit, bin liner, soft tonneau cover and black taillight covers.
Inside, the changes are less dramatic with TRD branded floor mats and a TRD gear lever on automatic models. Standard equipment in unchanged from the SR5 with Bluetooth, DAB Radio, cruise control, satellite navigation, cruise control, seven airbags and auto levelling headlights being standard.
Unlike the last generation Hilux TRD sold Down Under in limited numbers 10 years ago, the latest iteration drops the 225 kW 4.0-litre supercharged V6 for the standard model's 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel, again developing 130kW/420Nm with the six-speed gearbox or 450Nm with the six-speed automatic.
Pricing starts at $58 990 (R589 376) for models painted black and $59 540 (R594 871) for buyers wanting theirs white, while a further $2000 (R19 982) on top adds the aforementioned auto 'box (R609 358 and R614 853). Sadly, its remains highly unlikely that the Hilux TRD will make it to South Africa anytime soon.
