MOTORING NEWS - Peugeot PureTech's advanced three cylinder petrol engine technology, the winner of the 2015, 2016 and 2017 International Engine of the Year Award in the 1,0-litre to 1,4-litre category, offers the drive and performance normally associated with much bigger engines but with significantly improved fuel consumption and CO² emissions.
Put simply, a 1,2 PureTech engine gives the power and performance of a 1,6-litre engine, but the efficiency of a smaller engine. It's a product of Peugeot's 100 years of innovative engineering and combines reduced weight materials with the efficiency of applying direct fuel injection to three cylinders.
On some versions the French automotive manufacturer has added turbo power, optimising torque at all revolutions and delivering an engine that is ultimately designed to give maximum driving pleasure and responsiveness at any speed, for less.
BENEFITS
• Improved acceleration
• Reduced fuel consumption - meaning fewer visits to the petrol station
• Lower CO² emissions, resulting in lower road tax
WHY ARE 3 CYLINDERS BETTER THAN 4?
• Increases fuel efficiency (one cylinder lessto burn fuel)
• Less friction (one less cylinder results in a lower surface area, also saving fuel)
• Lighter weight (meaning less fuel has to be burnt to move the vehicle)
In addition to this, an aluminium cast-iron-lined block gives quicker engine warm-up and the use of low friction materials and a revised cooling system maximise efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
ENGINE OUTPUT
PureTech three cylinder petrol engines are designed to be compact and efficient while delivering big engine drive and performance. Direct fuel injection, light-weight materials and in some instances, turbo-charging, combine to deliver power and torque. The power and performance of PureTech ensures a responsive and enjoyable driving experience, underpinned by the latest technology.
VARIANTS
More compact, the PureTech naturally aspirated three cylinder engine reduces fuel consumption and CO² emissions by up to 25% compared to a four cylinder engine with the same power. This means the owner benefits from a reduction in fuel consumption of approximately 1,5 litres every 100km, while maintaining optimum driving pleasure.
Versions available are:
1,0-litre PureTech 5-speed manual and 1,2-litre PureTech 5-speed manual / 5-speed Efficient Tronic Gearbox ETG.
The three cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine is developed from the naturally aspirated version but adds a new generation high-performance turbo, offering superb low engine speed torque. The PureTech 3-cylinder turbo-charged engine reduces fuel consumption and emissions of CO² by up to 21% compared to the four cylinder engine of the same power.
Versions available are:
1,2-litre PureTech S&S 5-speed manual, 1,2-litre PureTech S&S 6-speed manual / 6 speed Efficient Automatic Transmission EAT6.
