In an interview with Auto Express, G-class Product Chief, Gunnar Guthenke, said it was “inevitable” that the iconic off-roader’s platform would spawn more models, hinting that updated dynamics could be applied in creating the 63 S.
“We have had [G63] 6x6, the G500 4x4 squared and the Landaulet. Will there be more to come? Certainly. “We have a small team, but all of these cars were developed very quickly, Let’s see what comes,” Guthenke told the publication.
Asked about a more luxurious model in the same mould as the limited run Landaulet styled Maybach-G650 unveiled last year, Guthenke remarked, “We have had Maybach with Landaulet. We want to nurture this tradition”.
Quizzed about the possibility of there being a more powerful version of the G63, he stated that, “Previously, you’d never have had the steering and dynamics for an S. I am so excited about future modifications,” referring to the G-class’ longer dimensions, wider front and rear track, and weight loss of 170 kg.
Despite Mercedes-Benz’s push to forced induced V6 engines for certain AMG models such as the 43 line-up and hybridised 53 line, Guthenke stated that “our customers love the V8,” suggesting that a bent-eight engine in the G will continue for now.
With recent reports suggesting that the three-pointed star might end production of its flagship V12 engines, the intended G63 S could replace the G65 and swap the bi-turbo 6.0-litre V12 for the standard G63’s 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8.
Power is however expected to be hiked substantially from the current 430 kW / 850 Nm, while a speculative claim is that the S might get the same engine AMG GT4 S, which produces 470 kW and 900 Nm.
