GEORGE NEWS - George police have opened an inquest docket after the body of an unidentified person was found in an advanced stage of decomposition in an open field near the George Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies, the body was discovered at about 16:45 on 29 August in an open field adjacent to the showgrounds, near the R102 in George.
Police were summoned to the scene after a member of the public made the discovery. On their arrival, fire department personnel who were already at the scene directed officers to the body.
The deceased was wearing black and blue jeans and a pair of brown shoes when the body was found.
The person has not yet been identified, and police are currently working to trace the deceased’s next of kin.
An autopsy is expected to be conducted later this week to determine the cause of death.
