Debuting at the same time in the E-class, the new moniker also sees the incorporating of a mild-hybrid system for the first time, in the form of a 48-volt setup as part of the three-pointed star's EQ Boost umbrella.
As previously reported, the 53 will serve as the flagship model in the CLS range and replace the previous V8 models, in order to avoid overlapping with the AMG GT4. It will however serve as entry point to the E-class range below the E63.
Using the same 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine as the standard CLS 450, the unit in the 53 has been tweaked to produce 320 kW and 520 Nm of torque, but with the EQ Boost activated to prevent a drop in boost, hikes output by an additional 16 kW and 250 Nm for a few seconds.
Like the E63, the CLS 53 sends its available grunt to all four wheels via a performance optimised 4Matic all-wheel drive system, through a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Top speed is again limited to 250 km/h and 0-100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds, although the addition of the optional AMG Driver's Package ups the speed to 270 km/h.
Aside from the AMG bespoke exterior and interior touches, the 53 also gets Benz's five mode Dynamic Select drive mode selector (Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), the Air Body Control air suspension system and AMG sport steering. Expect the same list of standard and indeed optional creature comforts and safety system as other CLS models.
Pricing is yet to be announced but based on German pricing of the CLS 450, expect the 53 to command a price tag in the region of R1.5-million.
