On sale locally since 2015, a year after debuting at the Paris Motor Show, the updates to the Sorento cosmetically consist out of new headlights and altered daytime running LEDs, restyled front and rear bumpers, the former now with integrated projector-type fog lights, a new take on the signature Tiger Nose grille, updated taillights, a new tailgate and standard fitment of 18-inch alloy wheels across the range.
Inside, all models now come as standard with the eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system incorporating satellite navigation, Bluetooth, USB and Aux inputs as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in addition to a new steering wheel and gear lever, updated instrument cluster, tweaked air vents and standard fitment of leather upholstery.
Now solely offered with seven-seats, boot space is rated at 605-litres or up to 1 732-litres with the second and third rows folded down, while on the safety front, all variants get six airbags, ABS with EBD and ESC, Hill Start Assist and rear Park Distance Control with a reverse camera.
Model-wise, Kia has streamlined the line-up from six to four models, with the previous entry-level LS and top-spec SX and SXL being dropped altogether, along with the 2.4-litre petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox. This leaves the LX as the new range entry point and the EX as flagship, both powered by the familiar 2.2 CRDI turbodiesel engine outputting 147kW/440Nm, with drive either going to the front or all four wheels.
New on the spec sheet are auto on/off headlights, electrically folding and heated mirrors, a rear USB port and dual-zone climate control on the LX, while the EX adds electrically adjustable front seats with two-way lumber support for the driver, illuminated scuff plates, rear sun blinds, a wireless smartphone charger and roof rails.
Despite being carried over unchanged, the oil-burner up front now comes connected to Kia’s brand-new eight-speed automatic gearbox in place of the old six-speeder, which the automaker says comes with 143 newly patented technologies. Claimed to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 9.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 203km/h, the new ‘box also comes with four modes; Eco, Comfort, Sport and Smart, while the driver can alter the steering via the three mode (Eco, Comfort and Sport) Drive Mode Selector.
A five year/unlimited km warranty and five year/100 000km service plan are standard on all models.
