Back in August, the company’s Director of Design, Adrian van Hooydonk, remarked that new model introductions won’t stop after the 8-series, before hinting that the 9-series only looks set for possible unveiling in 2021.
Speaking to Britain’s Autocar however, BMW Research and Development Head, Klaus Fröhlich, brushed these claims aside, saying that such a vehicle, especially in sedan bodystyle, is not needed.
“I don’t think you need a 9-series. In this segment, you need three cars – an X car, a saloon and an emotional sporty car – and we have them: the X7, 7-series and 8-series. Some competitors are already reducing the number of cars in this segment because volumes are so low,” Fröhlich said.
The seemingly debunking of the 9-series will therefore leave the 7-series as the biggest BMW sedan offered, though it will be joined later this year by the 8-series GranCoupe.
