Update
GEORGE NEWS - The former York Hostel on the corner of Market and Cradock streets is still under the ownership of the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW). The building has been standing empty for more than a decade.
George Herald last year reported that the George Municipality was looking for suitable office space in the CBD to accommodate its growing staff complement and that Council was considering the acquisition of the hostel for this purpose.
The empty building had been damaged by vandals some years ago, but since then security has been beefed up.
According to municipal communications chief Chantel Edwards-Klose, the municipality has been in contact with the department regarding the transfer of the property.
"We are awaiting the final outcome on this matter and neither occupancy nor renovations can take place until the final outcome has been received."
Comment from Public Works had not been received before the newspaper went to print.
