GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality Wow (Western Cape on Wellness) champion and acting HIV and Aids coordinator, Willbedine Jordaan, received a bronze certificate from the Provincial Department of Health for the brilliant work she has done to promote wellness.
Jordaan travelled to Cape Town last month to receive her certificate. The event was held at the Italian Clubhouse in Milnerton.
"The organisers were impressed with George Municipality, the only participant who actively promoted a healthy lifestyle in the community," said municipal communications officer Debra Sauer.
The Wow programme was implemented by the Department of Health in 2017. Wellness champions were identified and trained to promote wellness.
The initiative aims to enable people to make healthy lifestyle choices throughout their life. The programme addresses the ongoing rise in preventable non-communicable diseases (NCDs) or chronic illnesses (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases and certain cancers).
It promotes and activates increased knowledge of NCDs and healthy lifestyles, healthy eating, healthy weight management and increased physical activity or fitness to prevent, reduce and better support the self-management of chronic illnesses.
The main types of NCDs are heart / cardiovascular diseases (heart attacks and stroke), diabetes, lung / chronic respiratory diseases (such as asthma) and cancer.
George Municipality's HIV section raised awareness around the Wow programme in our communities by doing awareness campaigns throughout the year at nutritional centres (soup kitchens), churches and other organisations to promote healthy lifestyle choices.
They focused on teaching community members the basics of a healthy diet (such as preparing a healthy snack) and the importance of exercise, and did BMI, high blood and diabetic tests. They also hosted pamper sessions and held motivational talks and educational activities.
