GEORGE NEWS - Braving windy conditions, power outages and Covid-19, the Hoekwil Humane Society (HHS) hosted its latest animal welfare outreach in Touwsranten last week.
Vaccinating and deworming dogs, Viona Olieslager of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) had a steady stream of pet owners in her mobile unit.
Meanwhile, volunteers dipped dogs in a special mixture that combats ticks and fleas.
Strict Covid measures were enforced. The queue was kept socially distanced and volunteers ensured all attendees were masked and sanitised.
The society mainly focuses on Hoekwil and its neighbouring community, Touwsranten.
"Sterilisation is our main focus - but, while services are restricted, we make sure animals in our community are healthy and, as far as possible, not hungry," says the founder, Laurell Pelser. "It's very rewarding to see responsible owners bringing their pets for treatment, especially those returning for follow-up vaccinations."
With no offices or paid staff, the society puts all donations towards sterilising and treating animals. To see what they do, follow them on Facebook. To donate, please visit www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/the-humane-society.
Hoekwil Humane Society volunteers Carol Joubert and Bruno MacDonald treat a pup for for ticks and fleas.
