GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - The infamous Voëlklip viewpoint has claimed yet another life.
On Wednesday morning, 29 January at Approximately 08:30 emergency services were summoned to Voëlklip after eyewitnesses saw a man in a white Ford Ecosport drive down the cliff at the viewpoint near Herold's Bay.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies, the Ecosport was a rented vehicle.
"A member of the public alerted emergency services about the incident and a search and rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival they noticed the body of a man laying on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. The police have opened an inquest docket. At this stage no fowl play is suspected and the investigation continues," Spies said.
It is believed that the car was rented from an Avis car rental company in Port Elizabeth.
According to information gathered on the scene, the eyewitnesses who were hiking in the area, apparently told the police they saw the the man in the car driving over the edge of the cliff. The cause of accident is still unclear.
The unknown man's body was recovered by rescue services assisted by the Red Cross AMS helicopter, from the bottom of the cliff at approximately 12:20 on Wednesday afternoon.
This is the third incident since October 2019, where a vehicle has gone over the edge in the Voëlklip area.

On 22 October 2019 the entire country was in shock after Heidi Scheepers (35) and her two children, Hugo (2) and Cozette (6) lost their lives when their VW Caravelle went down the cliff near the Voëlklip viewpoint. Heidi and Hugo's bodies were recovered but unfortunately not Cozette's.
On 3 December last year, Zonita Basson's (52) Chevrolet Spark also plunged into the ocean at the same spot where the unknown man went over on Wednesday morning.
*By the time of going to print the George Herald could not get in contact with the eyewitnesses. The name of the deceased could also not be released as police still had to notify his next of kin.
