GEORGE NEWS - A family visiting from the Eastern Cape experienced a violent attack on their rented property in Kleinkrantz, Wilderness, in the early hours of Saturday 17 January, when an intruder assaulted their 20-year-old son with a panga.
According to local sources, the attacker first broke into the house while the family was sleeping and later attempted to break into the mother's vehicle.
The son, returning home, surprised the suspect on the property and confronted him. He was struck on the head with a panga, but managed to fend off the attacker. Both the victim and the suspect sustained injuries.
The Wilderness Defence Force (WDF) was alerted by a friend of the family. They provided first aid and secured the property until the police arrived. On behalf of the community, Marguerite van Ginkel, the George CPF Sector 5 co-ordinator, expressed gratitude to WDF members Will-Lee Fredericks and Riaan de Swardt for their actions.
A reliable source indicated that the suspect, a resident of Kleinkrantz and a known repeat offender recently released from prison, was apprehended and taken to hospital for treatment. A case has been opened with the George Police.
