GEORGE NEWS - The fire continues as access is limited. An excavator will be used this morning to start digging into the burning area.
The fire department remains on-site with municipal staff. Water is ineffective in deep-seated fires like these. This will be a steady operation to remain safe while dealing with the burning debris.
Apart from the diversion of the topsoil to the landfill site, the dumping of waste material at the landfill site has been temporarily stopped to allow the extinguishing of the fire.
The dumping of garden refuse, sawdust and wooden products has been temporarily stopped until further notice.
