GEORGE NEWS - After years of severe pain following a motorcycle accident, the 68-year-old Marguerite Joubert made the difficult decision to have her leg amputated.
She shared her story at the amputee support meeting at Redberry Farm on Saturday 11 July, hoping to encourage others who face the same life-changing decision.
The accident happened about four years ago and left her with long-term complications. Although deciding on an amputation was emotionally difficult, she eventually underwent the procedure in October last year.
Looking back, she believes it was the best decision she could have made.
After first wearing a temporary prosthesis while her residual limb healed, she received her permanent prosthetic leg about two months ago.
Today she is walking comfortably and playing with her dogs, and she plans to learn to drive again.
Her biggest dream is to ride her motorcycle once more.
Joubert said accepting the situation and choosing a positive mindset made all the difference. "You just need to make a positive decision and tell yourself you can," she said. "There is no such thing as 'you can't'. You can do anything in life."
She encouraged people facing amputation not to lose hope, saying life after amputation can still be full and active.
