GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Eight learners from the region, including two Kwaggas, participated in the International Science Fair (ISF) held recently in Johannesburg.
The two Grade 9 learners of Outeniqua High, Phillip van der Merwe and Kuyler Geldenhuys, respectively brought back gold and silver medals for their science projects showcased on 23 September in Boksburg. In addition to his gold medal, Van der Merwe won the junior category and received a special award of R5 000.
The rest of the group included three learners of Point High in Mossel Bay (Anne-Maria Andreani, Lunje Mengezeleli and Megan Bailey) and three of Knysna High (Sinokuhle Rungqu, Siviwe Ngqambuza and Bontle Mlokoti). These learners represented six projects at the fair and were accompanied by Caroline Bredell, the regional director.
Andreani and Bailey of Point High impressed the judges with their project "WitH20ut Drought". The duo has been selected to undergo more interviews for a final selection of projects to be showcased at other international science fests, such as the one held annually in Kenya.
Regional administrator Sonet Strydom said it is a huge accolade for Eden just to make the international list. She thanked all involved for their time and effort.
"It is only through the experience of individuals and educators within our area that we are able to encourage learners to participate in the fun of science through multiple workshops and help achieve project goals."
