GEORGE NEWS - Residents are advised to prepare for potential traffic delays and disruptions to public transport services tomorrow, Thursday 28 November, as the South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) holds a peaceful march.
The march, organised by Sanco, will proceed from Fourways in Thembalethu to the George CBD to deliver a memorandum of demands to the George municipality.
Participants will gather at Fourways in Thembalethu from 06:00, with the march scheduled to begin at 09:00.
The procession will move along Nelson Mandela Boulevard, turning right into York Street before concluding at the municipality offices.
The memorandum highlights the following:
- The high crime rate
- Rising electricity tariffs
- Unemployment challenges
- Inspections of spaza shops
- Implementation of the “One Shack, One Box” programme
- Sewerage issues caused by blocked drains
- Development of open spaces to prevent illegal dumping
- Public participation in the next phase of Go George services; and
- The impoundment of taxis that interfere with scholar transport
Impact on traffic and public transport
Authorities warn of significant traffic delays along the planned route during the march. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes and exercise patience.
Local taxi services will not operate until after the march, placing increased pressure on Go George bus services. Additionally, Go George staff members may face difficulties in reporting to work, potentially causing service disruptions.

Promise of a peaceful march
Bheki Hadebe, Sanco's provincial secretary for the Western Cape, confirmed that the march would remain peaceful.
“Once we have handed over the memorandum and the municipality acknowledges receipt, the march will be concluded,” he assured.
