GEORGE NEWS FLASH - The approximately 200 South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU ) members who occupied a section of the municipal building this morning feel they have achieved their objective.
They said management will have to take them serious. They managed to get about 200 SAMWU member into the building and peacefully blocked the entrance to Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha’s office on the 3rd Floor. The action took the municipal security by surprise, and staff in the main building were stunned to see them enter.
The protesting SAMWU members left the municipal manager’s office and regrouped in the Civic Centre Hall where an impromptu union mass meeting was held. Grievances relating to the Tuned Assessment of Skills and Attitudes (TASK) job evaluation process, staff vacancies and the use of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers in place of appointing municipal staff in positions were raised.
John Mcanjana, SAMWU Shop Steward and Chairman of the Garden Route and Karoo region said “We will meet with our members so that we can get a mandate to meet with the Mayor and Municipal Manager on Monday. We were only mandated to speak to the Municipal Manager today.”
