GEORGE NEWS - A George municipal roadshow highlighting the new qualifying income threshold of R4000 per month (from R3500 the last financial year) per household kicked off this week (starting 5 June) with the first of a series of community meetings throughout the municipal area.
The month-long Credit Control and Indigent Roadshow are aimed at informing households that may benefit from municipal rebates, how to register, who qualifies and how to update information.
The roadshow also serves to answer general questions about credit control and is attended by relevant finance department officials.

The following subsidised services that registered ‘indigent ‘households qualify for includes:
- Six kilolitres (6kL) of free water per month per household (everything above 6kL must be paid for);
- Seventy kilowatts (70kW) of free units of electricity per month per household (everything above 70kW must be paid for);
- 100% rebate for refuse and sewerage services;
- 100% rebate for property tax on a property valuation below R150 000 (if more than R150 000, a registered indigent may apply for a rebate in terms of the criteria).
To qualify for indigent registration, the household income may not exceed R4000 per month and can be claimed by the registered owner, tenant or backyard dweller (in cases of two structures). The claimant may not own more than one property.
Persons wanting to register or update registration details, can do so at municipal offices across the municipal region.
They must fill in the required form, available at the municipal offices, and take the following documentation with them:
- A certified copy of identification document (ID)
- income information such as a salary slip or SASSA documentation
- three months’ bank statements
- a municipal account
- a pre-paid electricity slip
- If the applicant does not know the whereabouts or contact details of the owners of the house he or she occupies, an affidavit stating this should be supplied.
