GEORGE NEWS - The intersection of Knysna Road and Madiba Drive remains fully closed following a sewer mainline failure that occurred on 22 December 2025. Repairs to the temporary line are progressing, with sourcing of materials well underway.
According to George Municipality, the process has been complicated by the exposure of an active Glass Reinforced Plastic pipe (GRP) water main over the weekend. To safeguard this water main and prevent any interruption to supply, additional shoring materials will be installed.
The planned switchover will be scheduled outside peak hours and on dry days to minimise the impact of high wastewater volumes from the catchment area.
Repair work is expected to commence after the builders’ break concludes on 5 January 2026, subject to favorable weather conditions. In the meantime, all required materials will be delivered to site, and final arrangements will be confirmed between the engineer and the contractor.
The intersection will remain closed until further notice.
The public is advised to avoid the area and make use of the approved detour routes.
Motorists are urged to proceed with caution and follow all traffic signage and instructions.
Further communication will be issued should the situation change.
