GEORGE NEWS - Twelve babied were born in George on New Year's day. George Regional Hospital welcomed four boys and seven girls and Mediclinic George one boy.
Mom Charlotte Nel’s baby girl was the first to make her appearance at George Hospital at 01:00, weighing 2.56kg.
At Mediclinic, Lily and Josh Davidson were pleased to finally see their son, Reuben Eli Davidson, face to face when he arrived at 08:18, weighing 4.065kg.
According to the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, 132 babies (66 boys and 66 girls) were born in public health facilities across the province on 1 January.
The first baby of the year, a baby boy, was born at Mowbray Maternity Hospital at 00:00, weighing 3.8kg, to proud mother Geneva Claasen.
Shortly after, at 00:03, a baby boy was born at Paarl Hospital, weighing 3.5kg and third was a baby girl, born at Stellenbosch Hospital at 01:38, weighing 3.2kg.
Mireille Wenger, Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness, congratulated all parents and thanked the healthcare workers, especially midwives, who sacrificed time with their own families to provide care to others.
She encouraged parents to take advantage of the opportunities offered by their local clinics to support their babies’ early development, stressing that the first 1 000 days of a child’s life, from conception, are critical for their health and well-being.
