GEORGE NEWS - Police Minsiter Bheki Cele's most recent claims that the Western Cape has the most policing resources in the country and that potholes cause hijackings, have tongues wagging all over the country.
Here's what our readers say.
They (ANC) want to control the Western Cape police budget and they can't. Did you hear how angry Cele was when he was challenged? Where was he in Senekal, where was he in KZN riots, where was he in Brackenfell EFF protests? Nowhere to be seen, no voice, no action. But where was he when there were peaceful protests of restauranteurs in Cape Town? Ordering water canons to be fired upon them. Where was he when the beaches were closed? Being a big guy and having surfers and 70-year-old dog walkers arrested. His reason why the Cape Flats have such a high number of high-jackings is because of the potholes!
Cele is lying, I'm from Knysna and the number of police officers and police visibility is appalling. Knysna's population is way more than Plettenberg Bay or Mossel Bay which have more than one police station but Knysna still only has one, which inconveniences the community. There is not even a mobile police station. Talk about police visibility - you will be lucky to even see a police van in the inner northern areas. The crime statistics have sky-rocketed due to such. Knysna consists of Sedgefield, Rheenendal, Khayalethu, Hornlee, Nekkies, White Location, The Heads, Brentonon-Sea and Harkerville - just to name a few - and the police force with no more than 20 vans doesn’t help the community at all. Kids are disappearing and some found dead. The absence of the police leaves more people vulnerable to criminals. When we petitioned in Knysna on 16 June about police visibility and at least a mobile police station, we expected a promising response but nothing to this day. We desperately need more police officers in Knysna. May God help us all.
