GEORGE NEWS - Peter's Fish and Chips, a popular eatery in Market Street, was damaged in a fire on Monday evening, 29 May, leaving the shop with significant smoke damage.
According to George Municipality's communications manager, Chantèl Edwards, the George Fire Brigade received a call a few minutes after 18:00 to alert them to the fire.
"The response team was able to extinguish the fire before it could spread, limiting fire damage. Smoke damage was unfortunately quite extensive," she said.
The cause of the fire is uncertain. The owner of Peter's Fish and Chips could not be reached for comment.
On Tuesday morning, George Herald journalist Michelle Pienaar was at the premises, but a man who unlocked the door to gain access, did not want to comment.
According to a neighbour, Ian Botha of Nel's Tweedehandse Meubels, he went to check on his business at about 20:30 on Monday night after noticing a post about the fire on Facebook.
His shop had not been damaged.
