GEORGE NEWS - George Herald realised the weight of the saying, "All good things come to an end", on Wednesday 28 February when the company had to say goodbye to the wit of their retiring colleague, Myron Rabinowitz (65).
Rabinowitz, a liberal, has been with the George Herald for six years and mostly reported on schools, welfare organisations, hospitals, airports and - a source of many jokes among his colleagues - also models.
According to Rabinowitz he landed the job at the newspaper by total fluke after he was sidelined by the African National Congress (ANC) in 2011.
In 2012 the then editor, Ilse Schoonraad, called him from Oudtshoorn at 23:00 and confided that she was in need of journalists.
"Without hesitation I replied, 'Tell them to hire me, they will never allow a communist to work for them'," reminisced Rabinowitz.
Rabinowitz was born in Worcester in 1953. He started his school career in Wellington and matriculated at Brakpan High School, Gauteng, which he refers to as "the Seat of Higher learning on the Far East Rand".
He studied marketing at Witwatersrand Technical College and landed a job as a trainee manager at OK Bazaars.
Many George residents became familiar with Rabinowitz during his service as ANC councillor, and he is a familiar sight scooting through town on one of his mopeds, but most will remember his civil contribution to each article he tackled.

New journalist
With Myron's farewell "scoot-off", a new addition joined the George Herald team.
Salette Cloete (36) will take over his great work. Cloete isn't new to the industry. Her byline has been associated with the daily Son and Tygerburger.
She recently relocated to George.
She obtained a journalism degree from Peninsula Technikon, today known as Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and went on to study a BPhil postgraduate course in journalism at Stellenbosch University.
Cloete is looking forward to building a reputation of credibility in the community and growing with the editorial team.
Salette Cloete is the new edition to the George Herald's editorial team.
