GEORGE NUUS - Die kanse is goed dat Leon van Wyk George se nuwe burgemeester gaan word.
Hy is vanmiddag (Vrydag 8 Mei) as die DA se burgemeesterskandidaat vir die vakante pos aangewys. Dit is kort gelede aan die George Herald bevestig.
Die DA, wat in beheer is van die stadsraad, het Donderdag en Vrydag altesaam 7 kandidate oorweeg vir die vakante pos. Kandidate kon aansoek doen en moes eers skriftelke voorleggings indien. Die afgelope week is aanlyn onderhoude met die 7 kandidate gevoer. Dit was die eerste keer dat dat so-iets in die DA vir so 'n pos gedoen is.
Die paneel het bestaan uit vyf verteenwoordigers van die oosstreek, vyf van die provinsiale uitvoerende komitee en 10 van die federale uitvoerende raad.
Van Wyk is ‘n ervare politikus en 'n geoktrooieerde rekenmeester van beroep. Hy het ook wye ervaring in die sakewêreld en het al gedien as sakeadviseur. Hy het voorheen op die burgemeesterskomitee van die stadsraad gedien as die lid vir finansies.
- 'n Stadsraad-vergadering sal gehou moet word omdat net 'n stadsraad 'n burgemeester kan kies. Van Wyk sal by so 'n vergadering die DA se kandidaat wees.

Over the last two days the DA’s Mayoral Selection Panel has met to interview the candidates who applied to fill the Mayoral vacancy in George.
This was a historic Selection Panel, as it is the first-ever to meet digitally as a result of the ban on gatherings.
The interviews followed a public call for applications, in which 7 candidates applied. Candidates were required to submit a detailed written assignment. They then each underwent an in-depth interview before the 20-member Selection Panel, in which they were questioned on their vision for the future of George, their understanding of the challenges facing George, and their plan to address these challenges. Each candidate was then scored by each member of the Panel, and these scores were combined to yield a result. This result was then approved by the DA’s Federal Executive, before considered finalised.
After this rigorous process, the Democratic Alliance is pleased to announce that Leon van Wyk has been nominated as the DA’s Mayoral Candidate for George. We congratulate Leon and wish him everything of the best in his term ahead.
Leon brings integrity, energy, and intelligence to the job. He and the DA team in George will restore absolute integrity to the George Council and will show the DA difference in government. They will work to win the trust of every voter in George. They will show that DA governments can be trusted to respect public resources and deliver better services to all residents. Importantly, our government in George will focus on attracting investment to grow the local economy, which creates jobs. George is the heart of the Garden Route, a proud town with a rich history and a wonderful diversity. Leon is a chartered accountant with extensive experience over a successful career, both in business and as an adviser to businesses. Leon previously served as the Mayoral Committee member for Finance in George, during which time George’s audit results improved from qualified to consistently clean and unqualified audits.
