GEORGE NEWS - Director of Civil Engineering, Regenald Wesso, is a registered professional engineering technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and holds professional memberships at the Institute of Professional Engineering Technologists (Ipet) and the Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (Imesa).
He was born and raised in George and from an early age, he knew that he wanted to become a civil engineer one day.
Wesso matriculated at George High School in 1993, the nearest school to his home that offered the prerequisite science subjects.
Wesso has more than 20 years' industry experience in consulting engineering, construction and local government in various capacities.
He looks forward to serving the community of George and draws inspiration from his high school's motto: Surge et Insta ("Rise and Shine").
In your term as director, what have been some of the biggest challenges you faced? What helped you get through that rough period?
After only two months at the helm of the Civil Engineering Services Department, the biggest challenge is the magnitude of our ageing infrastructure. With a team of dedicated colleagues, we are optimistic to rise to the challenge of finding innovative alternatives to unleash the hidden potential in our workforce that forms the backbone to our service capacity.
Mention a few highlights that made the year worthwhile
Meeting my follow colleagues during the first few days was a humbling experience and made me realise the size of the organisation.
The many accolades this department received over many years inspires me to add value to a team that is well drilled in their various areas of expertise.
Name a few things you are looking forward to in the new year
Good health and fostering positive relations with my colleagues.
What puts a spring in your step at work?
My 4-year-old daughter and loving wife.
What challenges do you foresee for 2018?
Lack of good rains to keep our dams full.
What are your new year's plans with your family/friends?
To keep on loving them.
Do you have a pet? If yes, what is it and what are their names? If no, why not?
No. I don't really know, just one of those things, I guess.
If you could table a motion in Council, what would it be?
I can't. That honour is reserved for councillors only.
