"The image was shot at the Lipizzaner Centre in Kyalami, Johannesburg. The interior of the barn arena is quite dark with very bright light coming through the windows on either side, so to get the image sharp, I had to push up the ISO, which made the images quite grainy.
"I also had to balance shutter speed with depth of field to get sharp images to keep most of the handler's face in focus while blurring the background.
"To compensate for the grainy image, I did a lot of post processing using Adobe Lightroom and then a monochrome conversion using Nik software.
Camera: Nikon D5500 with a Sigma 50 - 150mm lens
Camera settings: 1/640, f/4.0, ISO 4 000
Senior nature winner: Vlieënde by deur Verinda Bosch
Kamera-instellings: 1/500s, f4.5, ISO 800
Junior nature winner: Marabou storks settling by Pieter Viljoen
The photo was taken in April 2017 between Satara and N'wanetsi (Road S100) in the Kruger National Park.
It was at the end of a long and hot day when I saw this breathtaking scene.
The marabous were just settling in for the night and I had to shoot quickly as the light was deteriorating fast.
Camera: Canon EOS 60D with Canon 18-135mm lens
Camera settings: 1/25, f29, ISO 100
Senior open winner: Another power failure by Schalk Engelbrecht
The photo was taken inside the toll house in the Montagu pass, an ideal setting for this old-style photo.
I used natural window light and added candlelight. The model is Bianka Hartenstein.
Camera: Fujifilm XT2, ISO 1600
Junior open winner: Sea slug hiding by Annamie van Rensburg
It was a beautiful late afternoon at Boggomsbaai beach when this little boy was so intrigued by a sea slug, totally unaware of anything else around him.
It was very fortunate that the lovely reflection could also be captured.
Camera settings: 1/800 ISA 250, f7.1
The club meets every first and third Tuesday of the month at the Langgebou, behind the NG Moederkerk, 18:30 for 19:00.
