Update
GEORGE NEWS - In its response to the latest complaints about the repeated extension of time for the completion of the Caledon Street road works, municipal communications chief Chantel Edwards-Klose did not give a specific target date, but said the municipality is making every effort to conclude the works "at the earliest possible date".
"The contract has admittedly been faced with many unforeseen delays, and all parties have participated actively in finding a solution to each new challenge. The most significant delays were initially caused by the weather, and then followed by subsurface conditions, that were both beyond the control of parties to the contract."
With reference to the relatively fast and efficient Knysna/Courtenay Street road works project, she said, "You cannot compare Caledon with Knysna and Courtenay as the rebuild done on each road differs completely in terms of the approach and design due to the class of road."
She apologised for the inconvenience caused. With regard to construction activities and access, guests having difficulty locating addresses, and vehicle damage, she said, "There was extensive communication with affected residents, and particularly with regard to access to their properties. It is the guesthouse operators' responsibility to communicate with their guests, convey the relevant information and advise them."
She said not all residents were making use of the service provider appointed to deal with communication with affected residents.
