GEORGE NEWS - Alleged arsonist in court today: A man was arrested for attempted murder after he set a shop counter alight in Bontrokkie Street, Conville, on 2 August.
According to Conville police station commander, Col AB Kriga, the man entered the shop with a can of petrol and pushed away the customers. He then threw petrol in the shop owner's face and poured the rest onto the counter, after which he set the counter alight.
The shop owner's face also caught fire.
The suspect ran away and two customers assisted the owner to contain the fire before it spread. The suspect was subsequently arrested and will appear in the George Magistrate's Court for a bail application today.
Man sustains head injuries after brick assault
A man sustained serious head injuries in a violent incident in Garcia Street, Borcherds, in June. According to Kriga, the victim had to be taken to Groote Schuur Hospital after he was hit by a brick. Apparently a shop owner wanted to park his car on the sidewalk in front of his shop when the suspect (21) told him that he was not allowed to park there. An altercation ensued and the suspect started hitting the vehicle's bonnet and allegedly attempted to assault the victim.
When the victim eventually drove off, the suspect threw a brick at his car. He stopped and as he was getting out of the car, the suspect allegedly threw another brick at him. It hit him on the head and he collapsed. The suspect will appear in the George Magistrate's Court on 6 September. He is in custody.
The victim was discharged from hospital on 1 July.
Boys accused of sexual assault of 3-year-old
A three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by two boys, aged 7 and 12, in Conville on 31 July. On the day of the alleged incident, the child's mother left her with a caretaker before going to work. According to Kriga, that evening the child did not want to go to the toilet, crying and pointing to her private parts.
The little girl told her mother about the assault and who the attackers were. The case has been transferred to the George Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS).
