GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT NEWS - Garden Route and surrounding areas have been affected by heavy rain that caused flooding, posing a health hazard to the public.
With the prediction of more continuous rain for this week in the Garden Route district due to climate change, sewer overflows and infrastructure damages, waterborne pathogens can contaminate some waterways.
Floodwater may contain pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, faecal material and associated bacteria, as well as viruses from overflowing sewerage systems. Human faecal contamination, i.e., untreated sewage, has the highest potential to cause diseases.
Therefore, environmental health practitioners from GRDM encourage residents to avoid contact with floodwaters if possible. These floodwaters are highly likely to be contaminated by sewage. In addition, also avoid standing water, areas with visible debris and areas where floodwater accumulated.
The public is encouraged to report all flood-related incidents to the 24/7 Emergency Call Centre of GRDM on 044 805 5071.
