GEORGE NEWS - Residents have the perfect opportunity to explore the region’s natural beauty this week, with free conservation entry to the Garden Route National Park during South African National Parks Week.
From 7 to 13 September, South African citizens and residents can visit the park without paying conservation fees for day visits.
The offer applies to day visits only and excludes overnight accommodation and paid commercial activities.
Visitors aged 18 and older must present a valid South African ID book or card, while children under 18 must provide a valid birth certificate.
Explore the Wilderness section
The Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park offers plenty to discover.
Visitors can canoe along the tranquil Touw River towards Wilderness Beach or take on the popular Kingfisher Trail, which leads through the indigenous forest to a waterfall.
As an added attraction during National Parks Week, six canoes will be available from SANParks free of charge each day, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Those who prefer to explore on foot can enjoy the area’s indigenous forests, including a visit to the famous Woodville Big Tree near Hoekwil, an estimated 810-year-old giant.
The annual National Parks Week initiative aims to encourage South Africans to experience the country’s protected areas and develop a greater appreciation for its natural heritage.
