GEORGE NEWS - Apart from the upgrading of the roads in George, some roads are being dug up for the installation of fibre-optic cables.
Municipal spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose confirmed that Dark Fibre Africa is installing sleeves for fibre-optic cables in Ring Road and MTN is installing sleeves in Hope and Victoria streets.
Edwards-Klose says there is currently a big demand for fibre-optic connections with service providers unwilling to share sleeves, but George Municipality limits the fibre services to one per sidewalk.
"The sleeves are normally placed on the sidewalk but there is a short section near the corner of Ring Road and Rand Street where there is no sidewalk and in this case the sleeves had to be laid in the road next to the kerb. George Municipality gives approval for the works by issuing a way leave and a final inspection is done on completion.
"The service provider is then also responsible for the maintenance of the sidewalk for a period of 12 months after completion."
