GEORGE NEWS - One should always look on the bright side of life. Even if your car nearly burns down and you have no insurance.
"You have to look at it this way: fortunately I wasn't inside the car when it burnt."
So said Rana Muhammad, the owner of a Kia Picanto that was nearly destroyed by a fire in Wellington Spar's parking lot on Tuesday 31 January.
Muhammad, the owner of a cellphone and electronics shop in the centre, said he had just parked his car and opened his shop at about 07:30 when the security guard came to tell him that his car was on fire.
Were it not for a good Samaritan who grabbed a fire extinguisher and doused the flames, things could have been much worse.
The cause of the fire hasn't been confirmed, but Muhammad believes that it was caused by an electrical short on one of the wires in the roof of the car.
Mohammad believes that the fire started as a result of a electrical short circuit in the car's ceiling.
He had bought the car second-hand about a year ago and hasn't had any trouble with it. He also doesn't have insurance.
Although the interior of the car was completely destroyed, and the bodywork partially damaged, the little Kia still drove off.
Muhammad's plan is to get it to Cape Town where he will have it repaired.
No injuries were reported after the incident.
