GEORGE NEWS - Judgment was postponed in the trial of Mvuyisi Zweni (33), who stands accused of kidnapping a little girl in the New Harvest store at Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre last year.
The new date, 31 August, was set on Friday 4 August by Magistrate Eugenia Jacobs in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court.
The postponement was partly due to the taxi strike in Thembalethu as it was uncertain whether the protest action would escalate.
Zweni stands accused of kidnapping a toddler (3) in a shop in May 2022. On CCTV video footage, Zweni can be seen picking up the little girl and making off with her while the mother's back is turned. The toddler's young brother makes the alarm and the mother runs after Zweni.
About 15 seconds later she returns with the crying little girl in her arms after finding her in a storeroom with the man.
Zweni was arrested a few days after the incident and released on bail of R500.
Throughout the trial he stuck to his version that he did it because he likes children and he only wanted to play with her.
Chamelle Bastian is appearing for the state and the accused is represented by Zukile Mqulo.
