GEORGE NEWS - The man accused of an armed robbery on the Pacaltsdorp bridge near the N2 in November last year, was released on bail of R3 000 in the George Magistrate's Court last week.
Simbongile Peme was arrested shortly after the driver of a truck, a Somalian national, was threatened with a firearm and robbed of R60 000.
The truck's tyres were also shot at to prevent it from driving off.
According to Peme's legal representative, Winston Jansen, Peme had no firearm, ammunition, or the bag with stolen money in his possession at the time of his arrest.
The firearm was recovered and the money was allegedly found near him in a field.
"Nothing in the bag can be directly linked to my client," said Jansen
An initial charge of robbery was also retracted, and Peme now faces charges of attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
