An community initiative by Werner Fourie Optometrists and the Vision in Sight trust (SA Optometric Association) aims to help as many people as possible to see better during the month of June.
Staff and volunteers from LIFE Community Services, an organisations that works in all the disadvantaged areas of George, recently received training to administer basic vision tests available to people who earn less than R2000 per month.
On 15, 17 and 20 June, more than 236 were screened in Parkdene and Thembalethu by LIFE volunteers. The vast majority required visual aids and will undergo comprehensive eye examinations administered by Fourie and students from the University of the Free State on 27 and 28 June before receiving their new single vision spectacles. For some, this will be the first time in years that they are able to read a book.
Anyone wanting to donate frames can drop them off at Werner Fourie Optometrists, c/o Courtenay and Wellington Streets, George.
